What Is It Really Like? Your Questions Answered.

If you or a friend living in campus housing test positive or are at risk for having COVID-19, University Health Services (UHS) may direct you to stay temporarily at Foothill, UC Berkeley’s dedicated isolation and quarantine housing space. It’s natural to feel a little apprehensive about being asked to go there.

That’s why Student Affairs Communications sat down with two UC Berkeley staff who play key roles there: UHS Nurse Manager Lisa Polley and Amber Ulmer, Associate Director of Residential Life. Polley is a registered nurse who has been at Berkeley since 2007 and has specialized expertise in infectious disease. Ulmer has a master’s degree in higher education and, prior to COVID, participated in extensive training and simulations for pandemics and disease outbreaks in residence halls. They took time out of their busy schedules to answer some of the many questions that students have about staying at Foothill.

What is Foothill and why are students sent there?

Foothill is a UC Berkeley residential hall complex dedicated this academic year specifically to students living in campus housing who need to isolate or quarantine. With a suite-style setup, a spacious layout with mostly outdoor hallways set in a beautiful wooded area at the northeast side of campus, it’s a safe and comfortable setting:

  • We strongly advise that students take advantage of Foothill and our dedicated onsite staff who make sure students are healthy, connected, and cared for.
  • Returning home or to family is not recommended due to the high risk of spread.
  • The Foothill complex is large and has two completely separate areas for isolation and quarantine housing. Students in isolation have tested positive for COVID, or are believed to be positive and may be waiting for results. Students in the separate dedicated quarantine space at Foothill is for students who have high exposure risk such as being a close contact, or link to a known COVID-positive member of a resident’s household grouping.

What kind of care and support are available to students?

It’s important to note only students who are medically stable are moved to Foothill. A number of things are in place to support students’ physical and mental health:

  • At least once per week UHS nursing staff come to Foothill to test students who are in quarantine.
  • The UHS COVID response team is a team of nurses and trained contact tracers. This team routinely calls students to check on them. If a student’s medical condition worsens, contact tracers consult with the nurse on call and facilitate transportation to the Tang Center for the student to be evaluated by a clinician.
  • A 24/7 nurse advice line is also available. The ICs offer drop-in time via Zoom late in the evening for residents who have questions or want to talk with someone.
  • Our Residential Psychologist, Aaron Cohen, provides direct and swift support when a resident identifies they need to connect with Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS). We have four Peer Health Workers who provide mentorship and social support to residents.

How long does a student have to stay at Foothill?

Although it depends, most of the time students are at Foothill between ten and fourteen days. UHS advises students when they can be released from isolation or quarantine per current public health guidelines.

What kind of room does a student get?

Foothill is a suite-style residence hall ranging from one-bedroom to eleven-bedroom suites. Located at the top of campus in a beautiful wooded area makes it great for taking walks. All students in isolation or quarantine get their own private bedroom. Students who have symptoms, are awaiting test results, or have had high-risk travel or other exposure have a suite to themselves. Otherwise, students are placed up to four per suite, with their own private bedroom and bathroom stall.

How are students notified they need to go to Foothill? How quickly do they have to move?

UHS nurses call students who test positive or inconclusive, while UHS contact tracers call students who may have been exposed. As much as possible, the staff works to coordinate the timing of the move on their schedule that same day. Students get a packing list and a pickup time and location to be driven to Foothill by a staff member wearing personal protective equipment (PPE).

What can students bring to Foothill? What if they forget something?

Students are provided a packing list of items they may need, such as clothing, medications, technology devices, academic items, and physical wellness items. If a student forgets something, there’s a concierge cart stocked with common items, or Instacart is another option. If needed, plans can be made to retrieve an important item.

If a whole residential household grouping is sent to Foothill, will they be located together?

Yes, we try to put whole residential groupings in suites together or near each other. Students get a private bedroom, may share a bathroom, but get their own private bathroom stall, shower, and sink.

What staff members are on hand at Foothill?

Four staff members called Isolation Coordinators (ICs) are at Foothill. Although they may be wearing a mask, have no doubt there’s a welcoming smile underneath. We know loneliness can be an issue, and our staff tries hard to be warm, open, and available. The staff really gets to know students in these moments, their feelings, and patterns of living. We care about students a lot, and we want them and their parents to know that.

What services are available to students?

Students still have access to the services they have currently, just in a modified way. Laundry, exercise, mental health support, mail, packages, food or grocery delivery, etc., are all available. Students text the isolation staff onsite within 10 minutes of needing to leave their room to ensure limited people are out of their room at the same time. Students must wash their hands and put on a mask before leaving their room. Students are asked to stay in their rooms from 10 p.m. to 9 a.m.

How do students get meals?

Every day Cal Dining drops off bags with breakfast, lunch, and dinner for students. Students can pick up the bags at the isolation coordinators’ office at lunch and dinner time. It’s a great time for the staff to check in with everyone and see how they’re doing. If a student has class, meals are delivered to their door. Students can also sign up to get optional snacks at an additional cost.

Can students get food and other deliveries?

Yes, Instacart and DoorDash deliveries are accepted 9 a.m.–10 p.m. Students text staff within 10 minutes of pick up to ensure only two people are out of their room at the same time. After using hand sanitizer and putting on a mask, they can get their delivery in the office and return to their room. Any time students leave their room they must text and follow this process. Students are asked to stay in their rooms from 11 p.m.–9 a.m.

Can students go outside? What other things are there to do?

Yes, Foothill is located in a beautiful wooded area, and students can go outside and walk around. Under the guidance of staff, a limited number of students can interact outside within current public health guidelines while maintaining social distancing and wearing of masks. Creative online programming is available to students, such as Zoom painting, wand making, or playing Bingo via text messages. Sundays are self-care check-ins and students can get a goodie bag. Fitness equipment such as yoga mats, fitness bands, and videos are available.

From a UC Berkeley student who experienced campus quarantine: “The IC team was AMAZING! Extremely responsive, nice, and always putting in some extra effort to make sure I was feeling great, not just fine. Many warm thanks to everyone on the team.”
